Abstract:OBJECTIVE To deeply understand the life experience and health needs of the family members of diabetic patients in the process of patient health management and to explore ways to improve family support of diabetic patients, so as to improve the lev⁃ el of health management of diabetic patients. METHODS Using purpose sampling and convenient sampling, one-to-one, face-to-face and semi-structured interviews with the families of 15 diabetic patients were conducted. It was coded and classified by maxqda 18 and summarized by content analysis. RESULTS The positive experience of the family members of diabetic patients in the process of patient health management had extracted five sub-themes of enhancing health awareness, establishing a positive attitude, paying attention to healthy eating, strengthening physical exercise, and regularly monitoring blood sugar. Negative experience extract⁃ ed six sub-themes of increased mental burden, increased life pressure, increased energy consumption, restricted social activities, emotional fluctuations, and neglect of personal health. Health needs had extracted four sub-themes: emotional support needs, psycho⁃ logical adjustment needs, role balance needs, and community care needs. CONCLUSION In the health management of diabetic pa⁃ tients, positive experiences of family members should be actively promoted, and family participatory health management models should be promoted; negative experiences of family members should be promoted on a regular basis to improve the family support system of diabetic patients; effective family health management strategies to improve the life quality of diabetic patients.
